Project description: Development of an extranet for the clothing group, Bestseller

Vision
The vision was to create a global extranet for the clothing group, Bestseller. The aim of the extranet was to provide Bestseller’s shop managers worldwide with a tool which they could use to reinforce the daily dialogue between the shops and the headquarters in Brande.

Method

In consultation with the customer, the system was constructed in ASP. The underlying data structure is driven by an MS SQL server. Due to the large number of pages (up to 100 pages per language), it was important to create a clear and functional administration module right from the start, enabling each department head to update his/her own area on the extranet. In addition, an HTML editor was constructed from which the administrator can change the size, font etc. of the text in an environment similar to WORD. The administrator can also change the appearance of the whole extranet via the administration module. With just 3 clicks, the background colour can be changed for all pages and new pictures can be uploaded.

Result
The result of this development project is a robust system which is used on a daily basis by shop managers worldwide. Managers can use the extranet to find inspiration, apply for courses, order goods and much more. The system is in operation in all Bestseller, Jack & Jones, Vero Moda and Only shops. Each shop has access via one or more users. The system contains a dynamic number of languages. In addition, the large number of pages on the extranet can be modified via an administration module, and the webmaster need have no prior knowledge of HTML. As the system contains confidential information, both user name and password are required for access.

The components of the system are outlined below:

  • News


  • Purchase goods – place orders for clothing and view a summary of order status. The facility is integrated into Webseller’s order system.


  • Marketing - information about current marketing campaigns, e.g. the window setup for forthcoming campaigns can be viewed. Marketing materials such as bags, gift certificates etc. can also be ordered.


  • Trends - current trends are usually presented on a page with flash animation.


  • Figures and information – summary of each shop’s turnover and number of visitors.


  • Bestseller Wheel – the shop managers’ training handbook with 120 dynamic pages.


  • Bestseller academy – access to courses offered by the Bestseller group.


  • Network - internal telephone book with details of the contact persons in each country.
